Unmanned vehicles cruise into Arctic for voyage of data collection

In the early hours of August 1, one of two remotely operated unmanned sailing vehicles snapped this dreamy photo as it sailed through the choppy Bering Strait, bound for a voyage of data collection. In the distance are the islands of Little Diomede in the United States and Big Diomede in Russia.

With the August 22 arrival of the NASA Global Hawk unmanned aircraft on Virginia’s eastern shore, scientists and pilots are now ready to start the NOAA-led mission to improve hurricane forecasts of track and intensity using data collected by the Global Hawk during the season’s hurricanes.

Scientists from NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, the University of Alaska and the Alaska Ocean Observing System are teaming up this summer and early fall to use new unmanned tools to study how melting glaciers in Alaska’s Prince William Sound may be intensifying ocean acidification in the sound and on the Gulf of Alaska continental shelf.
